FEITO 2
Luis Feito

Luis Feito (Madrid, 1929 – 2021)

During seven decades of artistic production, Luis Feito positioned himself as one of the great promoters of culture in Spain and an indispensable figure in Contemporary Art History. In 1957 he founded the group El Paso along with other artists such as Saura, Millares and Canogar, with whom he shared a concern for the stagnation of art in Spain and a clear opposition to the Regime, and together they began to renew the aesthetic postulates of the country and to follow new ways of creation.

The works of Feito, throughout its different eras, is characterized by the gestural abstraction of ascetic overtones. The formal and material simplification are features of a work influenced by the automatism and unique brushwork of traditional Chinese painting. His spontaneous strokes are the direct emanation of the inner nature of the artist.

He spent long periods abroad and exhibited regularly in large cities such as Madrid, Paris, Milan, New York, Helsinki, Tokyo and Rome, having taken part in events such as the XXXI Venice Biennale, ARCO and Art Basel.

Among the distinctions he received are the appointment as Official of the Arts and Letters of France (1985), the Gold Medal of Fine Arts (1998) and a position as Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando de Madrid (1998).

His work is part of important museums and public collections such as the Guggenheim Foundation in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca, the Juan March Foundation and the Fundación The Caixa.
